Work Permit – For non-EU students

Non-EU citizens must apply for a PhD/researcher work permit, and possibly a visa.

Although many non-EU citizens do not need a visa to enter Denmark, the work permit is required for all long-term stays, such as PhD study. Find out more about Visa and Residence permit (LIFE).

In the case of citizens from countries who must obtain a visa for short-term stays in Denmark, they will not need to apply for an additonal visa once they obtain the work permit. The application for residence and work permit for researchers, PhD students and research assistants, also known as form ST2, is found on this site: http://www.nyidanmark.dk/en-us/. Go to Forms, under Select Topic select Work, under Subtopic select All. Detailed instructions are on the first page of the form.

The form should first be completed in part by the University and then sent to the student, who will finalize and send it to the Danish embassy in his or her current country of residence.

Tip: A number of companies offer special expediting services to process visas and work permits in just a few days, for a substantial fee, of course. These can be found by Googling the bolded keywords above and looking for companies located in the same city where the appropriate Consulate is located (where their work permit application will actually be sent). Keep in mind that, if the applicant is short on time, it may be possible for the Forest and Landscape Department (KU) to complete their portion (Part 2) and send it independently to the Danish Immigration Service, as well as to the student, via e-mail. The work permit can be collected once in Denmark, however the individual must bring proof of University support during their stay in Denmark with them to the airport (e.g. a copy of the approved work permit application), particularly in the case where travel plans show the PhD will be staying in Denmark longer than 3 months, or is arriving with only a one way ticket.
