Register for Appropriate Tax Deduction
If you are a non-Danish citizen you may be automatically charged approx. 60% in income tax.
As soon as possible, you should contact SKAT (tax office) to register for the appropriate tax deduction (approx. 36%).
Much of their website is in Danish, so ask someone in your department for assistance. You can likely resolve this issue on your own over the phone, as representatives speak English.
First point of contact: Call SKAT at 7222-1818 (press 9 for English), with your CPR number in hand. If you have any trouble your Danish-speaking officemates or supervisor can help.
At any time you can access your current tax information on the SKAT website and print the Forskudsopgøreslse form for the current year for your records. Notes: Some banks may require the Forskudsopgøreslse form when you apply for a credit card.
*** Important note for PhDs attending courses or carrying out field research abroad: If you plan to stay outside of Denmark during your PhD, inform the SKAT office before leaving so that you can receive additional tax deductions. You should speak will colleagues about their own experiences with this, as the procedure varies for each individual (i.e. Danish citizen vs. non-citizen, homeowner vs. renter, and so on...).
