Research in Economics of Forest and Nature
Our research on Forest and Nature focuses on the total economic value of these resources, including both marketed goods and non-marketed goods and services.
We apply several approaches including production optimisation, environmental valuation techniques and regulation economics of both use and non-use values of forest and nature.
We work with cases all around the world.
Key research questions are:
- How can we develop improved methods for economically optimised management of forest and nature, specifically taking into account uncertainty, e.g. from climate change?
- What is the value of non-marketed goods and services from forest and nature areas, and how can we improve methods to assess them?
- How can we design mechanisms for regulating and improving the provision of goods and services from forest and nature, to bring it closer to the socially optimal level?
Large international collaboration projects
- NEWFOREX: New Ways to Market and Value Forest Externalities (EU FP7), where we in five European case studies and a comparative study in Brazil raise the question: Can we contribute to the increase of societies' welfare by developing new ways to enhance the provision of forest goods and services?
- MOTIVE: Models for Adaptive Forest Management (EU FP7), where we raise the question: Which trees can adapt best to climate change? In this project we investigate adaptive management strategies that address climate and land use chang, and examine the impacts of these changes with respect to a broad range of forest goods and services.
