Title of PhD Thesis and presentation:
Land use change and payments for environmental services among small scale farmers
Summary:
The PhD study investigates land use changes among Costa Rican coffee farmers, who have an important role in providing environmental services such as biodiversity conservation. Using econometric analyses, the study identifies underlying and mediating factors that influence land use decision making processes. The aspect of temporal reference in data collection in land use change studies is given some attention. Furthermore, an investigation of three local institutions facilitating contracts of Payments for Environmental Services (PES) reveals how intermediary institutions differ in their ability and willingness to include smallholders in the Costa Rican national PES program.
